Fujairah - History

Ruins in Fujairah

The historic town of Dibba al-Fujairah, at the northern end of the emirate, is an important centre for both agriculture and fishing. The village of Bidiya has a unique four-domed mosque that is the oldest in the country.

Archaeology is a new discipline and almost unexplored. Therefore it is  the aim of many,  to establish an archaeological map of the Fujairah and to create a local institution, which would enable all to exploit the national heritage.

Financed by the Swiss-Liechtenstein Foundation for archaeological research abroad (SFLA), an archaeological cooperation between Switzerland and Fujairah Emirate is underway.

Beginning in 1987, the SFLA program, through long efforts,  the whole archaeological sites, was uncovered,  discovering megalithic graves, dwelling houses, fortified houses, race cultivations, copper quarrying workshops, petroglyphs. Members of the SFLA group of research, are actually working on the final report of this project.
