  Al Karak - Culture

Al Karak is also known as Kerak. It is a road junction and an agricultural trade centre. The city’s ancient name means “Wall of Potsherds” in Hebrew, or “City of Potsherds” in ancient Moabite.

Al Karak stands on a rocky plateau, cut off on all sides by a valley, and surrounded by a crown of hills. It is the centre of a rich agricultural district.

Karak is most famous for its Crusader castle, although it had historically served as the Moab stronghold and Christians are said to have lived in the area long before the Crusades. It has the graves of the Islamic military leaders who fought in the Mu'tah Battle.

It is also well known for sports especially mountain climbing and dear hunting. Karak environment is very clean; its mineral water springs are used as medical treatment for special diseases. Moreover, Karak is distinguished for its beautiful nature and clean air. Mu'tah University is in Karak and it includes a military College.

Within Karak, numerous small hotels are available. Karak can be reached via the Desert Highway by turning right at Qatrana. However, the King’s Highway is the recommended route, as it will take you over one of Jordan’s most spectacular sights, Wadi Mujib. About 50 kilometres north of Karak, this canyon is over 1000 meters deep. Wadi Mujib was the "Arnon Gorge" or "Arnon River" of the Bible (Numbers 21: 24; Judges 11: 18), a natural boundary that separated the Moabites in the south from the Amorites in the north.
