Yazd - Culture

 

Yazd City is a relaxed, tree-lined town, lies on the edge of Kavir Desert at the foot of tall mountains with an altitude of 1230m (4059') so can be very hot in summer & very cold in winter. Population is over 300,000. Yazd was an important pre-Islamic city. There are many sights in Yazd.

Tomb of the 12 Imams: Close to Alexander's Prison is this 11th century tomb from Seljuq (1037-1157) with fine inscription names of 12 Shiite Imams or Saints. None of the Saints are buried here.  

Doulat Garden: The residence of Karim Khan Zand, the former ruler with beautiful stained glass windows that was built in about 1750. It is famous for having the highest badgir (wind tower), 33m high (109 feet).

Yazd Old City: Yazd is one of the oldest towns in the world. Look for badgers, on rooftops which function as an air-condition but healthier. Badgirs insure ventilation in the lower parts of a house and are made to catch the lightest breeze and direct it to underground room, which is necessary in hot summer. Buildings in Yazd are made of cob and clay and are carefully maintained. The style of buildings is simple, exotic and traditional with clay colour from sun-dried bricks. It is famous for its silk & other fabrics.

Jami Mosque: This magnificent 14th century structure worth visiting was built under the direction of Bibi Fatema Khatoun, wife of a former governor of Yazd, Amir Chakhmagh. This mosque with its beautiful mosaic dome & Mehrab, extraordinary high tile entrance portal & two minarets with inscription dominate the old city.  

The district of Ardakan is located on the main road between Tehran and the port Bandar Abbas and it is the largest district of the province. The name of Ardakan is formed from two parts "Ard" which means holy and "Kan" which means mine or place.  

The district of Taft is located in the south- west of the province. It includes the highest peak of the province, Sheerkooh. The weather of Taft is moderate and many kinds of fruit grow there.  

Mihreez is located 35 kilometres south to the city of Yazd, and it is the name of a cluster of villages that were called in the past by the name "Mihrijerd". According to historians, the name belongs to "Mihrnegar" the beloved daughter of Anosheervan, the Sasanid King.  

The name "Maybod" comes from the Mid-Persian era that was put on this town during the Sasanid era. This name was regularly mentioned in historical books during the early Islamic centuries. The town of Maybod is one of the rare and historical and significant Iranian towns, because it remained although its old town was demolished partly many times during its long history.  

The province of Yazd is very interesting regarding wild life because of the verities of its plants and animals. The protected wild areas "Kalmand" and "Bahadoran" with and area of 250 hectares and the protected area of "Kooh Bafq & Areez" with an area of 100 hectares are very interesting for their location on the edge of the central desert of Iran which caused a verities of desert plants and animals.
